Mexico Wins Gold in El Salvador
Mexico playing with six new young players, stunned Jamaica to win Gold against 93 – 41. Jamaica who surprised everyone by defeating Puerto Rico in the semi-finals came out a bit tentative in the gold medal game going down 8 points in the first quarter. Mexico held a 17 point lead at the half (44-27) on the strength of good shooting by Carlos Diaz and Jose Ortega both with 12 points. Brian Ingram responded with 9 for Jamaica.
In the third quarter Mexico dominated Jamaica keeping them off the score board while scoring 23. It was Mexico 67 Jamaica 27 going into the final quarter. Jamaica got back into the scoring in the fourth period but it was not enough and Mexico wins 93 – 41. Top scorers: for Mexico Alfredo Lopez 21, 9 from the three point line, Jose Ortega 20 and for Jamaica Tanto Campbell 12 and Brian Ingram 9. (MEXICO 93 – JAMAICA 41 (18-10) (26-17) (23-0) (26-14))
Mexico wins Gold, Jamaica Silver and Puerto Rico Bronze, they will join Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Colombia and the USA at the Americas Cup in Richmond, British Colombia, Canada where they will battle for one of three invitations to the 2010 World Championship in Birmingham, Great Britain.
In other games the same day, the Bronze medal game with the winner advancing to the Americas Cup in 2009 saw Puerto Rico and El Salvador fighting hard to the end. The first half was close with Puerto Rico up 20 – 16 at the half. Puerto Rico outscored El Salvador 19 – 14 in the third quarter to extend their lead to 9 points. In the fourth period El Salvador stayed with them but could not overcome the lead losing in the end by 11 points. Final score Puerto Rico 54 – El Salvador 43. Top scorers: for Puerto Rico were Hector Maldonado with 17 and Carlos Ocasio with 14, for El Salvador it was Rafeal Melgar with 15 and Raul Alvarega with 14. In the game for 7/8 Honduras stayed close through the first half of play but Guatemala proved too strong for them in the second half outscoring them by 31 to 15. Top scorers: for Guatemala were Juan Cuxun with the game high 31 points and Fredy Acajabon and David Lara with 8 each. James Andreafis had 19 in a losing cause for Honduras with team mate Danilo Portales adding in 16. (GUATEMALA 67 - HONDURAS 39 (16-14) (20-10) (13-8) (18-7))
The game between Costa Rica and Nicaragua was awarded to Costa Rica when Nicaragua had to return home early.
