In the second game of the series Mexico was just too strong for the team from South Africa. Three Mexican players, Floralia Estrada, Anaisa Perez and Rosa Vera scored 6 points each to help the team to a 20 – 5 lead at the end of the first period. The second period Mexico continued to dominate their opponents with 9 point from Carmen Montaño and 8 from Lucia Vazquez. South Africa just could not mount an offense. It was 39 – 11 at the half and it was clear that Mexico was going to win the right to go to London.
Both teams came out in the second hand using all their bench, making sure everyone got to play. In the third period on the strength of an eleven point quarter by Magaly Miranda Mexico continued to move away from South Africa leading 56 – 15 with one quarter to go.
South Africa outscored Mexico in the final quarter 12 – 10 with Masego Mokhine scoring 10 of South Africa’s 12 points.
Final score Mexico 66 – South Africa 27
South Africa coach Willie Mulder had this to say “It was very important for our women’s program to get a chance to play in a qualification tournament. I want to thank Mexico for recognizing that they were much stronger and allowing the games to played in such a nice and fair way. Now we have to go back home and get more countries supporting their women’s programs in Africa so our Zone can improve.”
Mexico coach Pablo Larraga was pleased with the result “It is nice to have the final spot for London but we will need to work very hard now to do well. These games allowed us to play all our players and give them game experience for the future.”
Maureen Orchard, President of IWBF, “I was pleased for Mexico as they worked hard for their right to go to London finishing fourth at home in Guadalajara and then needing to defend that victory against South Africa. What I liked most about these games in the true sense of wanting to share the experience with South Africa and not bury them. Mexico can be very pleased with their representatives as can South Africa. Women’s wheelchair basketball is alive and well and will only get better.”
The teams will play an exhibition third game Sunday.
